IBW + Tidal Volume Calculator

Calculate ideal body weight (IBW) and generate quick ARDSNet tidal volume targets for lung-protective ventilation. This tool is built for respiratory therapy, ICU workflow, ventilator setup, and bedside double-checking when you need a fast tidal volume by IBW reference.

Use this page as part of the broader PulmTools ventilation cluster: start with ARDSNet guidance, then compare oxygenation with the P/F ratio and oxygenation index tool, and connect it to blood gas interpretation with the ABG Interpretation Guide.

Enter height in inches. This calculator accepts adult heights from 48 to 84 inches.

Why IBW matters in ventilation

In mechanical ventilation, tidal volume is usually based on ideal body weight, not actual body weight. That is because lung size tracks better with height than total body mass. Using IBW helps reduce overdistension risk and supports lung-protective ventilation.

This is especially important in ARDS, where clinicians often target 4 to 6 mL/kg of IBW. If you are setting up a vent or double-checking a tidal volume order, this calculator gives you the quick conversion you need.
