Reading labels
What does “size” mean here?
- Jackson size
- A numbered sizing convention used by Jackson metal tube families and in the leading number of Shiley Flex product codes. A Jackson size by itself does not identify a specific model or length.
- ISO size
- A manufacturer-reported size designation. For Shiley Flex, the code guide identifies the digits after the first number as the ISO size and outer-cannula ID.
- Tube ID and inner-cannula ID
- The tube’s listed ID and the ID of a fitted inner cannula are distinct fields. The available lumen with an inner cannula in place can therefore be smaller.
- OD and length
- Separate dimensions. Length definitions and configurations can vary, especially for adjustable and extended-length models.
A question for LDA field definitions
What does the EHR’s “size” field store?
A field labeled “size” may be used for a manufacturer’s printed size, a named sizing system, or a diameter measurement. Those are not always the same value.
The examples above make the difference visible: a Portex Blue Line Ultra size 6.0 lists 6.0 mm tube ID and 5.0 mm ID with its inner cannula; the Shiley Flex code 6CN75H includes Jackson size 6 and ISO / outer-cannula ID 7.5 mm, with a separately listed 6.5 mm inner-cannula ID.
The resource does not prescribe an entry. It gives clinical teams and EHR builders the product details needed to ask which meaning their local field is intended to capture.
Two uses of one name
Jackson sizing and Jackson metal tubes
Jackson appears in two contexts in this reference. It is a numbered sizing convention, and it is also the name used for metal tube product families. The table shows three Pilling Jackson #6 examples: original regular-length, improved regular-length, and improved short-length. Each is a distinct catalog configuration.
Teleflex/Pilling lists the #6 examples with a 7.2 mm ID and 10.0 mm OD, while their lengths and product codes distinguish the configurations. Its catalog defines ID by reference to the inner tube’s distal end. Fenestrated, adapter, and other Jackson models have their own catalog entries and are not interchangeable based on the #6 label alone.
